The Nanoscale Science and Nanochemistry Departments at the Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research in Stuttgart announce a joint opening:
A PhD Student or PostDoc Position in Electronic Structure Characterization of New Topological Quantum Materials
Topologically nontrivial materials, prominently represented by topological insulators, Dirac and Weyl semimetals, have attracted significant attention in the solid state community due to their exotic electronic states and new emergent phenomena. In order to translate these properties into potential applications, for example in quantum computing or catalysis, the discovery and rational design of new quantum materials, as well as the comprehensive characterization of their electronic, magnetic, optical and transport properties are key prerequisites.
We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic experimentalist with a strong background in condensed matter physics (specifically in solid state spectroscopic techniques), who is interested in the discovery of new quantum materials and their electronic properties and who enjoys working in an interdisciplinary team of solid state physicists, materials chemists, and theorists.
Qualifications:
• Excellent background in the electronic structure of quantum materials
• Experience in (synchrotron-based) angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy and in other spectroscopic techniques is beneficial.
• Technical proficiency in MatLab, IGOR, or LabVIEW will be helpful.
• The candidate enjoys working independently in a team as well as in a dynamic and multidisciplinary environment.
The successful PhD candidate will be enrolled in the International Max Planck Research School for Condensed Matter Science (IMPRS-CMS). Particularly outstanding candidates may have the opportunity to join the Graduate Center for Quantum Materials (GC-QM).
The Max Planck Society is committed to increasing the number of individuals with disabilities in its workforce and therefore encourages applications from individuals with disabilities. Furthermore, the Max Planck Society seeks to increase the number of women in areas where they are underrepresented and therefore explicitly encourages women to apply.
Interested candidates should send an application letter, curriculum vitae, list of publications, and the names of two referees by October 31, 2019 to:
