We are looking for a candidate with a background in physical chemistry to apply for an Intra-European Fellowship for Career Development (IEF) or an Incoming International Fellowship (IIF). The Fellow will work for two years in the laboratories of Dr Steffi Krause and Professor Michael Watkinson at Queen Mary University of London (UK). Candidates must hold a PhD in physical/electro-chemistry. Experience in either surface modification with organic monolayers and basic organic synthesis or instrument development/ instrument control software would also be an asset. The candidate must have a strong publication record and be able to think creatively and work as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Description
The proposal, which will be written jointly by the candidate, S Krause and M Watkinson, will be centred around a high-resolution light addressable potentiometric sensor (LAPS) set-up, which was developed in S Krause’s group and can simultaneously record electrochemical and optical images. Areas that could be explored in the proposal are the development of a fast imaging system to allow monitoring of fast signalling events in living neuronal cells; the modification and patterning of silicon substrates and study of cell-attachment on differently modified surfaces to improve the understanding of cell-surface interactions for the development of tissue engineering scaffolds; the development of cell based biosensors; or the development and investigation of high-density aptamer or DNA arrays for biosensing. The choice of area will depend on the candidate’s scientific background and research interests. Candidates must hold a PhD in physical/electrochemistry. Experience in either surface modification with organic monolayers and basic organic synthesis or instrument development/ writing of instrument control software would also be an asset. The candidate must have a strong publication record and be able to think creatively and work as part of a multidisciplinary team. The call deadline is 16th August 2013. To allow sufficient time for the writing of a proposal, expressions of interest including a CV, a publications list, the names of three academic referees and a cover letter outlining research interests should be sent to S. Krause (s.krause@qmul.ac.uk) no later than 16th June 2013
Benefits
Marie Curie Intra-European Fellowships (IEF) and International Fellowships (IIF) (http://ec.europa.eu/research/participants/portal/page/people) offer a 2 year contract with a competitive salary and consumables/travel budget.
