NCAR Earth System Laboratory (NESL) - Climate and Global Dynamics Division (CGD)

BASIC JOB FUNCTION : Collaborates with scientists in the Terrestrial Sciences Section and Integrated Assessment Modeling Group, and with the Community Earth System Model (CESM) Land Model, Societal Dimensions, and Biogeochemistry Working Groups, to provide a leadership role for agricultural science and modeling at NCAR. The research areas will be related to the development and evaluation of crop modeling in the Community Land Model (CLM) relative to and in combination with economic modeling of the agricultural sector in the integrated assessment model iPETS. This work will be used to assess and improve the simulation of crop growth and yield production under historical and future changes in crop management, atmospheric CO2, and climate for the regions of Brazil, India and China, with a view to expanding the study worldwide.

DUTIES INCLUDE

: Conducts independent and collaborative research on crop modeling using the Community Land Model, including development and evaluation of specific model parameterizations, preparation of historical and future datasets for model simulation and evaluation. Works with scientific teams and graduate and undergraduate student visitors to accomplish research tasks.

Investigations will focus on changes in crop physiology, growth and productivity through: (i) Expanding the crop types currently simulated in CLM by drawing on data from existing models such as Agro-IBIS, EPIC, and LPJ-mL to allow for the addition of tropical crops such as rice, oil seed, and sugar cane; (ii) Improving the simulation of crop growth and yield under changing atmospheric CO2, climate, fertilizer application, irrigation, multi and mixed cropping, and new crop varieties; and (iii) Help develop methods to ensure consistency between agricultural productivity in CLM and the economic modeling of the agricultural sector in iPETS.

Plays a central, visible role in the dissemination of scientific results through presentations, reports and publishing in refereed scientific literature.

REQUIREMENTS INCLUDE :

Education and Experience:

 
  • Recent Ph.D. in agricultural science, earth system science, environmental science, terrestrial ecology, or a related field.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
 

  • Expert knowledge of agricultural systems, crop yield modeling, and biogeochemistry.
    • Knowledge of the physical and biological basis of land surface and biogeochemical models.
      • Skill in the use of graphical analysis tools for large datasets (e.g., NCL, IDL, MatLAB).
        • Skill in the use of UNIX operating system and its variants.
          • Experience with high performance computing environments.
            • Ability to understand and modify code in Fortran90.
              • Strong skills in verbal and written communication of scientific results.
                • Ability to work both independently or collaboratively as a member of interdisciplinary scientific teams.
                  • Ability to organize, prioritize, and coordinate multiple tasks.
