Applications are invited for a postdoctoral researcher to join Professor Paul Riley’s laboratory.
You will work on a project focused on characterising the role of the epicardium in the direct cellular contribution or signaling to invoke resident cell-based repair of the injured adult heart. Specific objectives will include:
• defining the regenerative potential of activated adult EPDCs, as directly compared to their developmental counterparts
• understanding the role of the epicardium during inherent heart regeneration in the adult zebrafish and neonatal mouse post-injury, and to extrapolate cellular and molecular pathways to non-regenerative models
• to determine the molecular signature(s) which defines the active epicardial population(s) across both regenerative and non-regenerative model organisms and mechanistically how these cells can be reprogrammed towards embryonic/regenerative potency
• to identify novel inducers of human EPDCs and signaling pathways which might activate or instruct cardiovascular cell fates as a significant steps towards drug discovery.
You will have a doctorate or equivalent in a relevant area of research and a background in developmental biology, stem cell biology and/or cardiovascular sciences. Experience in working with animals models is essential. Surgical experience to include generating myocardial infarction in rodents, tissue cell culture, and flow cytometry would be an advantage.
You will be based in the Department of Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics, University of Oxford, Sherrington Building, Parks Road, Oxford, OX1 3PT.
The post is funded by the BHF for 5 years. An early start date is required.
The closing date for applications is midday Wednesday August 7th 2013. Interviews are expected to be held Friday 16th August 2013.
