Imperial College London

Faculty of Natural Sciences

Department of Life Sciences

Research Associate

Salary range: £29,140 – £37,770 per annum

A Research Associate position has become available in the laboratory for crystallisation and crystallographic studies on bacterial transporters in the Membrane Protein Crystallography Laboratory at the Research Complex in Harwell (RCaH) located near Didcot, Oxfordshire. The Laboratory is headed by Professor So Iwata, who is a world leader in crystallisation and crystallography of membrane proteins. In particular, the group has a proven track record of working with respiratory and photosynthetic membrane protein complexes and membrane transporters. The laboratory is an out-house of Imperial College London and is fully equipped for structural studies for membrane proteins.

The post holder will work in the laboratory for crystallisation and crystallographic studies on various drug targets including G-protein coupled receptors. The post is a part of K4DD programme (Kinetics for Drug Discovery, http://www.imi.europa.eu/content/k4dd), funded by the Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI), which is a joint undertaking between the European Union and the pharmaceutical industry association EFPIA.

You must have a PhD in a biological science, or the equivalent in professional qualifications and experience, and an interest in membrane protein crystallography. You will also have experience in membrane protein production and in crystallisation and X-ray crystallography, particularly on membrane proteins or macromolecular complexes. A strong background in protein crystallography and experience in molecular cloning, mammalian cell culturing and biophysical techniques, and experience of X-ray diffraction data collection are also essential. Experience in preparation and crystallisation of membrane transporters would be an advantage.

You must have excellent verbal and written communication skills and be able to write clearly and succinctly for publication. You must also experience in laboratory research, be able to conduct a detailed review of recent literature and work as a part of a team, as well as independently. The ability to develop and apply new concepts and creative approach to problem solving are also essential.

The post is available initially for up to 50 months.

Informal enquiries may be made to Professor So Iwata (s.iwata@imperial.ac.uk) or Dr Konstantions Beis (konstantinos.beis@imperial.ac.uk).

Our preferred method of application is online via our website http://www3.imperial.ac.uk/employment (please select “Job Search” then enter the job title or vacancy reference number – NS 2013 146 IL – including spaces, into “Keywords”). Please complete and upload an application form as directed.
