Salary £29,388 to £36,840 per annum dependent on experience
Fixed Term Contract – 3 years The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute is an international leader in cancer research. This opening offers an exciting opportunity to study the pathogenesis of myeloid leukaemia using state-of-the-art model systems under the joint supervision of Drs George Vassiliou (Sanger Institute) and Brian Huntly (University of Cambridge), as part of a Leukaemia Lymphoma Research Programme. The successful applicant will be based at the Sanger Institute and work within the Haematological Cancer Genetics Team to study how specific mutations identified by whole genome sequencing of human acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) promote leukaemogenesis in order to develop novel therapeutic strategies against this disease. In practice, this will involve the systematic analysis of the effects of specific mutations alone and in combination, focusing on how these impact on haemopoiesis and activate leukaemogenenic pathways. The expertise and unique biological resources in the Huntly and Vassiliou laboratories give this project the potential to address key biological questions in the field.Essential Skills
- PhD in a relevant field of biology
- Expertise with murine models
- Strong molecular biology skills
- Proven ability to write scientific papers and achieve publication in high impact journals
- Proven independent working style, technical problem solving, data analysis and generation of novel ideas
- Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse group of scientists with different skill sets and expertise
Desireable Skills
- A track record in haematology or oncology research
- Experience in presenting results at scientific conferences.
- Experience in supervising and training other laboratory personnel
- Interest, expertise and knowledge in developing systems to explore biological function in vertebrates
The Genome Campus is a 55-acre estate south of Cambridge in the grounds of Hinxton Hall. Nestled in the quiet countryside of these landscaped gardens, are two world-class research facilities: the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute and the European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI). The site has become the British hub of biomedical science.
In addition to its peaceful location the campus offers excellent facilities including a state of the art IT – data centre, gym, two cafes, a nursery, dining facilities, a cycle to work scheme, car sharing and free campus buses from various locations around Cambridge.
This is a fixed-term contract for 3 years, typically for Postdoctoral Fellows in their first or second postdoctoral position as part of a period of early career research training.
