A postdoctoral position is available immediately for up to 24 months, to undertake experimental research into fundamentals of deformation in hexagonal close packed metals and alloys. Applicants will have research experience in small scale mechanical testing, nanoindentation, and focus ion beam microscopy, and related techniques. The post is within the Micromechanics group lead by Professor Angus Wilkinson (http://users.ox.ac.uk/~ajw/index.shtml).
The post is funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) through a flagship programme grant on “Heterogeneous Mechanics in Hexagonal Alloys across Length and Time Scales” (EP/KP034332/1). The project aims to further the mechanistic understanding of deformation processes and to exploit this understanding in tackling long standing issues of dwell facet fatigue in Ti alloys and pellet-clad interactions and delayed hydride cracking in Zr alloys. There will be strong interaction with project partners at Imperial College London and the University of Manchester along with industrial collaborators at Rolls-Royce, EdF, Westinghouse, Timet, AMEC, and AWE.
By the start date applicants must have completed a doctorate (or at least have submitted their thesis) in a relevant physical science. The successful candidate will demonstrate an outstanding track record of research and publications, commensurate with stage in career. Please see the job description for full details and selection criteria.
The closing date for applications is 12.00 midday on Thursday 12 September 2013 with interviews currently planned for the week beginning 30 September 2013.
