Marine Systems Modelling, Directorate of Science and Technology, National Oceanography Centre (NOC), Southampton
About the role:
We are seeking to recruit a postdoctoral researcher to work on the EU FP7 project “Ships and Waves Reaching Polar Regions” (SWARP). You will join an established and vibrant research group at the forefront of high resolution modelling of the global oceans. Your main duties will be to develop and test new components of the CICE sea ice numerical model for application to the Marginal Ice Zone (MIZ) in the Nucleus for European Modelling of the Ocean (NEMO) ocean model, http://www.nemo-ocean.eu/. The developments will include implementation of a combined sea ice rheology and optimizing ocean mixing in the MIZ. The work will be carried out in collaboration with the Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Centre and the project partners. You will contribute to the production of project reports and scientific publications emerging from the project.
This post is offered on NERC terms and conditions and is available for 2 years commencing 1 February 2014.
Salary:
£26,450 to £29,710 per annum (additional allowances may be available for exceptional candidates).
About you:
You will have a PhD or equivalent degree in physics, mathematics or other numerate disciplines and a strong background in computing. You should be experienced in coding in Fortran or C, preferably within a UNIX environment. You will enjoy working as part of a team and be able to perform experiments with large numerical models on supercomputers. A background in ocean and/or sea-ice modelling would be a strong advantage.
What we can offer you:
In return for your talents, we offer a competitive remuneration package, including a RCUK pension scheme, 30 days annual leave with a further 10.5 Public/privilege days and free car-parking. Opportunities for further training and development are supported. The role will include periods of travel both within the UK and internationally.
About us:
The National Oceanography Centre (NOC), part of the Natural Environment Research Council, is a national research organisation, delivering integrated marine science and technology from the coast to the deep ocean and is one of the top five institutions of its kind in the world. With sites in Liverpool and Southampton, it is the UK’s leading centre for sea level science, coastal and deep ocean research and technology development. Working closely with its partners and associates, it provides capability to meet needs across the UK marine science community (http://noc.ac.uk/)
NOC sustains long-term marine science on the national and international stages, including long-term ocean observational programs, high-resolution global ocean modelling, mapping and survey and data management. The centre hosts the undergraduate and postgraduate programs of the University of Southampton and the University of Liverpool, educating some 700 undergraduate and postgraduate students every year.
The Marine Systems Modelling (MSM) group at NOC has more than two decades of expertise in global and regional high-resolution sea ice-ocean modelling, modelling of marine ecosystems, ocean turbulence, surface waves, tides and storm surges. The group is a partner in the NEMO ocean modelling framework, an international research consortium, led by France, the UK and Italy. For more information on the MSM group and NEMO please visit the following websites:
