The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) is one of the world’s most influential cancer research institutes. Our mission is to make the discoveries that defeat cancer. We have a long and distinguished history of research with a major impact on the outcome for cancer patients. Our unique partnership with The Royal MarsdenNHS Foundation Trust (RMH) makes us the largest comprehensive cancer centre in Europe, performing high quality original basic research and translational studies. Under the leadership of Chief Executive Professor Alan Ashworth FRS, we are committed to attracting, developing and retaining the best minds in the world.
Main Advert Text :
We seek a motivated Post-doctoral Training Fellow to study how cancers become resistant to drugs using novel bioinformatics approaches. Drug resistance is a main factor of therapeutic failure and cancer death. Using data generated from large-scale clinical trial studies and the new Tumour Profiling Unit at ICR, there is a rare opportunity to study and predict the process of drug resistance development in patients. The goal is to develop bioinformatics methodologies for integrating different types of data to shed light on this process. Our lab bridges computational pathology, statistical analysis, and cancer genomics with an aim to foster new developments in quantitative methodologies. In particular, we have developed image processing tools for histopathological and immunohistochemical images to turn pathological observations into quantitative measurements (Yuan et al. Sci Trans Med 2012), ready to be associated with structural variances and other mutations called from sequencing.
The successful post holder will enjoy working in the interdisciplinary fields and collaborating with our internal and external collaborators. The post holder will excel in coordinating between programming and exploring new research areas through interacting with these collaborations, be a fast learner, and be interested in various scientific subjects and research areas.
Applicants must hold a PhD in quantitative sciences such as Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Ecology, Physics, or Statistics, and have extensive experience in statistical data analysis. Education/experience in biological/medical sciences is desirable.
Appointment will be on a Fixed Term Contract for two years with a possible one-year extension. A starting salary is in the range of £28,087 to £36,953 p.a. inclusive, depending on experience. There is potential to progress on the salary scale up to £38,990 p.a. inclusive. The successful candidate will be based in Chelsea, London potentially relocating to Sutton, Surrey at a later date with the team.
To apply please include the following with your application:
• A full CV with a publication list (two to three pages)
• Covering letter including the names and contact details of two referees (one page)
• Research plan (one to two pages outlining your current research interests and research plans for the next 3 years)
