Applications are invited for 2 years with a further possible extension of an additional 2 years (4 years in total) post-doctoral position funded by the Engineering and Physical Science Research Council (EPSRC). The aim of the project is to develop a technological platform for the design of novel peptidic materials for biomedical and biotechnological applications.
The use of non-covalent self-assembly to construct materials has become a prominent strategy in material science offering practical routes for the construction of increasingly functional materials for a variety of applications. A variety of molecular building blocks can be used for this purpose, one such block that has attracted considerable attention in the last 20 years is de-novo designed peptides. In the past two decades scientists have investigated the possibility to exploit the self-assembly properties of these short natural molecules to design novel materials. Peptides offer a number of advantages to the material scientists. Peptide synthesis has become a routine procedure making them easily accessible. The library of 20 natural amino acids offers the ability to play with the intrinsic properties of the peptide such as structure, hydrophobicity, charge and functionality allowing the design of materials with a wide range of properties. Our group (www.polymersandpeptides.co.uk) has in the past 10 years invested significant effort in the development of such materials.
You should have, or be working towards, a PhD or equivalent in materials chemistry and characterisation or related subjects with particular expertise in peptide and conjugation chemistries fields. You will be part of a large research team and will be required to drive collaborations with scientists across the University and beyond in a number of biomedical fields for which these materials will be designed and therefore good interpersonal and leadership skills are required.
