Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory - Livermore, CA
The Center for Applied Scientific Computing (CASC) has an opening for a postdoctoral researcher to carry out research and development in the area of multilevel approaches in uncertainty quantification (UQ) at extreme scale exploiting highly accurate hierarchies of coarse (upscaled) discretization schemes typically developed based on algebraic multigrid, utilizing high-performance computing. A main focus will be the construction of adaptive schemes that can be effectively reused in Markov Chain Monte Carlo simulation of multiphysics phenomena with uncertain input data that are common in subsurface flow models as well as in various (non-PDE) network applications. Candidates will be encouraged to conduct relevant exploratory research and publish their results; will work in a team environment that encourages participation in the academic research community while focusing on problems of interest to LLNL programs; will interact with scientists from LLNL programs to help address their needs as well as outside collaborators to extend research results and software; will report to the appropriate CASC Group Leader. ESSENTIAL DUTIES - Conduct research and development of methods for constructing highly accurate adaptive coarse (upscaled) finite element and more general purely algebraic coarsening schemes based on specialized algebraic multigrid techniques utilizing high-performance computing to handle extreme scale problems. - Develop prototype software utilizing high-performance computing to evaluate novel techniques in the aforementioned area. - Pursue i ndependent (but complementary) research interests and interact with team members internally and externally to define and carry out the research. - Participate in existing division collaborations and alliances with academia and industry to define and carry out research. - Publish research results in external peer-reviewed scientific journals and participate in conferences and workshops. - Present formal and informal overview of research progress at group meetings. - Perform all assignments in accordance with ES&H, security, and business practice requirements and policies. ESSENTIAL SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES - Recent PhD in Computer Science, Mathematics, or related field. - Research experience in one or more of the following areas: numerical PDEs, finite elements and multigrid. - Demonstrated ability to conduct high quality research and to develop implementations of sophisticated algorithms to evaluate the results. - Significant experience programming in C and/or C++. - Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills necessary to interact with members of a research team, author technical and scientific reports and papers, and deliver technical presentations. - Publication record in peer-reviewed journals and/or conferences. - Strong decision-making skills necessary to independently solve complex research problems. DESIRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES - Experience in one or more of the following areas: element based algebraic multigrid, basic knowledge of Monte Carlo and MCMC simulations, (parallel) mesh/graph partitioning. - Experience implementing algorithms for distributed computers or multi-core CPUs or GPUs. - Experience in mesh, graph, or image processing. - Experience with MPI, OpenMP. - Expertise in both Computer Science and Mathematics, e.g. in areas such as algorithms, data structures, linear algebra, statistics, graph algorithms.
