The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) is one of the world’s most influential cancer research institutes. Our mission is to make the discoveries that defeat cancer. We have a long and distinguished history of research with a major impact on the outcome for cancer patients. Our unique partnership with The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust (RMH) makes us the largest comprehensive cancer centre in Europe, performing high quality original basic research and translational studies. Under the leadership of Chief Executive Professor Alan Ashworth FRS, we are committed to attracting, developing and retaining the best minds in the world. The ICR was ranked as the UK’s top academic research centre in the 2008 Higher Education Funding Council Research Assessment Exercise. Based on our publication record, citations and impact we rank among the world’s leading cancer research centres.
The Cancer Research UK Cancer Therapeutics Unit, within the Division of Cancer Therapeutics, is a multidisciplinary ‘bench to bedside’ centre, dedicated to the discovery and development of novel therapeutics for the treatment of cancer. Our exciting goal is to discover high quality drug candidates for validated biological targets and to progress these candidate compounds to clinical trial. Our chemists work alongside world-class biologists and drug metabolism specialists focusing on new molecular targets emerging from ground breaking genomic and cell biology research.
A postdoctoral position in synthetic organic chemistry applied to the discovery and optimisation of new drugs to treat cancer is available in the team led by Professor Ian Collins, located in well-equipped laboratories in Sutton, South London. The successful candidate will apply their synthetic organic chemistry knowledge to prepare molecules of interest as anticancer agents. In addition, the successful candidate is expected to develop skills in medicinal chemistry, as well as a broader understanding of drug discovery.
Knowledge, experience and achievement in synthetic chemistry are essential. The successful applicant will have ample opportunity to develop additional skills in post. This is an ideal opportunity for an enthusiastic, committed chemist to make an important contribution to improved therapies for cancer patients, while gaining experience and training in drug discovery skills in an institute with a track record of success. Appointment will be for 2 years in the first instance.
