The Department of Materials Science and Engineering is one of the national leaders in the field: it was rated in the top 4 in the latest Research Assessment Exercise (2008) when accounting for profile and volume, and nationally is 2nd in terms of research income. The department currently has around 40 academics, supported by 20 Technical and 16 administrative staff. One of eight departments in the Faculty of Engineering, the Department of Materials Science and Engineering is growing rapidly, and currently has 65 Postdoctoral Research Staff, 141 Research Students, 19 MSc students and 224 students taking taught MEng and BEng degree programmes.
This post is concerned with characterisation and testing a range of materials, (metals, ceramics and coatings, many produced in-house) largely for tribological applications. You will use a range of characterisation equipment; in particular you will offer skills in advanced transmission electron microscopy and associated techniques such as electron energy loss spectroscopy. You will ideally also be proficient in techniques such as focused ion beam sample preparation. You will ideally be experienced in tribology and materials processing. You will show flexibility in your approach to solve problems, liaising with others to bring in additional techniques, where appropriate.
Applicants should have a good honours degree and PhD in a relevant subject area (e.g. materials science, engineering or the physical sciences). Equivalent experience to a PhD will be considered.
