Postdoctoral Associate: Molecular Biology (2) and Bioinformatics (1)
Cornell University - New York
-
21992
Description
Boyce Thompson Institute for Plant
Research (BTI), in collaboration with the USDA Agricultural Research Service
(USDA-ARS), is seeking applications for three Postdoctoral Associate positions
to support a program on genome sequencing, transcriptome analysis and RNA
interference technology development for a major insect pest responsible for
severe losses to global agriculture. The
ultimate goal of this research is to develop RNAi technologies for control of
insects and insect transmitted viruses.
However, effectiveness of the RNAi technology is dependent on the
selected target genes that are critical for insect survival and virus
transmission. Genome sequence information will be generated, along with the
identification of target genes through comparative transcriptome analysis and
sRNA profiling.
Three positions are available:
1.)
A bioinformatics
postdoc, who is responsible for genome and transcriptome sequence analysis will
be stationed at Boyce Thompson Institute, Cornell University, Ithaca, New York.
2.)
A molecular biologist with a
primary focus on insect DNA preparation, RNAi development and insect cell line
regeneration will be stationed in Charleston, South Carolina at the
USDA-ARS, U.S. Vegetable Laboratory.
3.)
A molecular biologist with a primary focus on insect
RNA preparation, quantitative verification of differential gene expression and
target gene selection, and RNAi evaluation on different insect species for
virus transmission will be stationed in Salinas, California at the USDA-ARS,
U.S. Agricultural Research Station.
All three postdoctoral research associates will be BTI
employees and managed through BTI.
Qualifications
A Ph.D. degree is required in disciplines including Bioinformatics,
Molecular Biology or closely related fields. Working experiences with next-generation
sequencing technologies, bioinformatics including genome and transcriptome
analysis, and molecular biology in plant virology and/or entomology are
helpful.
The incumbents will conduct basic research using modern
molecular biological technologies, including next-generation sequencing and
bioinformatics analysis to identify target genes that could be useful for the
development of RNAi technology for insect management.
