Oak Ridge National Laboratory - Oak Ridge, TN
Purpose
The Environmental Sciences Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) invites applications for a postdoctoral researcher to work on multidisciplinary projects studying soil organic matter (SOM) transformation and interactions with minerals and metals in general, and the effects of Arctic permafrost thawing on SOM degradation and greenhouse gas production.
Major Duties / Responsibilities
The researcher will help design, execute and analyze experiments to measure the effects of SOM structure, organo-metal/mineral interactions, soil/pore water chemistry, and microbial activity on SOM turnover rates, carbon dioxide or methane production. Research in this area will focus on laboratory-based microcosm and soil core experiments, with an opportunity to participate in Alaskan field sampling and analysis. The team will work closely with terrestrial ecosystem modelers to develop and parameterize quantitative models of SOM decomposition as well as researchers in biogeochemical transformation of contaminant metals.
