Applications are invited for two postdoctoral researchers to work within the group of Professor Shankar Balasubramanian on the chemical biology of nucleic acids, funded by Cancer Research UK. Having recently demonstrated the existence of G-quadruplex structures in the DNA of human cells (Nature Chem. Biol. 8 301, 2012; Nature Chem. 5 182, 2013), the successful applicants will play a key role in understanding the function of G-quadruplex structural motifs in cancer and their possibility as targets for therapeutic intervention.
The first post (reference MA01890 – CR01) is based at Cancer Research UK's Cambridge Institute and will exploit genomics and bioinformatics through cellular and molecular biological approaches. It is essential that the candidate has extensive practical experience in next generation sequencing, particularly ChIP-seq. Candidates possessing a significant bioinformatic and statistical analytical background will be at a particular advantage. This post is available from 23 April 2014.
For the second post (reference MA01890 – CR02), based at the Department of Chemistry, we seek a postdoctoral scientist who is interested in the structure-function relationships of G-quadruplexes. The successful applicant is likely to be a chemist/chemical biologist and will have a strong background in organic and/or medicinal chemistry, with an interest in working with molecular and cellular biologists. Experience in molecular design and synthesis, biophysics or nucleic acid chemistry would be highly desirable. This post is available from 1 April 2014.
We seek highly motivated individuals with a capacity to communicate well and work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team. Candidates should possess (or be about to receive) a PhD in a relevant discipline. Interviews are expected 11/12 December 2013.
Applications, quoting the post reference, should include a 2-page CV, publications list, contact details for three professional referees, a completed form CHRIS/6 Parts I and III (downloadable from http://www.admin.cam.ac.uk/offices/hr/forms/chris6). Applications should be sent to Leanne Moden, PA to Professor Shankar Balasubramanian, Department of Chemistry, Lensfield Road, Cambridge CB2 1EW (email: herchel-smith-pa@ch.cam.ac.uk). See www.ch.cam.ac.uk/group/shankar for further information.
Please quote reference MA01890 and the appropriate post reference on your application and in any correspondence about this vacancy.
The Department holds an Athena Swan bronze award for women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Medicine.
Closing date: 21 November 2013
