The post-holder will join the Immune Regulation and Autoimmunity groups within the Department of Immunobiology, housed in laboratories occupying the 3rd floor of Borough Wing in Guy’s Hospital. Here is sited the Programme in Infection & Immunity, incorporating Immunobiology and the Department of Infection, in contiguous space and occupied by 18 Principal Investigators and over 100 scientists and staff: www.kcl.ac.uk/medicine/research/divisions/diiid/departments/immunobiology/index.aspx .
This post is made available as a result of a grant from Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, and is available for 3 years.
The post-holder will be involved in a project working on the detailed characterization of a novel population of islet-antigen specific regulatory T cells in the context of the human autoimmune disease Type 1 diabetes. The work will involve preparation and detailed analysis of human blood samples from individuals with a variety of backgrounds of autoimmunity including those with or at risk of developing T1D as well as those at low risk of disease development. Analysis will be performed using a variety of established technologies; including cytokine ELISPOT, multi-parameter flow cytometry, T cell cloning and transcriptional profiling by next generation sequencing as well as the development of novel assays and technologies.
Detail
The ideal candidate will have a strong background in cellular immunology; will have experience of in vitro cell culture techniques; will have experience of flow cytometry; will have excellent project design and recording skills; and will be interested in the translational pathway. The successful candidate will be a member of both the Tree (Immunoregulation) and Peakman (Autoimmunity) research groups which form two highly integrated and collaborative teams dedicated to unravelling the immunology of human Type 1 diabetes and using this knowledge to develop novel methods to slow or prevent the disease.
