Following the prestigious award of a European Research Council Advanced Grant to Professor Shankar Balasubramanian, we seek to appoint a highly motivated postdoctoral scientist to explore the chemical biology of RNA G-quadruplexes. This exciting new inter-disciplinary project builds on our extensive experience in the understanding of non-canonical G-quadruplex nucleic acid structures. Having recently demonstrated the existence of G-quadruplex structures in the DNA of human cells (Nature Chem. 5, 182, 2013), we are now extending our studies on RNA G-quadruplexes (see Nature Chem. Biol. 3 218, 2007; NAR 2012, 40 4727, 2012).
Our primary goals are 1) to verify the existence and distribution of RNA G-quadruplexes in the cellular transcriptome; 2) to define the role of RNA G-quadruplexes in mRNA translation; and 3) to investigate the function of the telomeric-repeat RNA (TERRA) G-quadruplex.
We seek a genome biologist with extensive bioinformatics skills in transcriptome analysis to be part of a team of outstanding individuals who are skilled in the laboratory and are confident, independent thinkers. Researchers who are able to integrate working at the bench with computational approaches would be at a particular advantage. Candidates will be excellent communicators and be able to collaborate effectively to satisfy the goals of this major initiative.
Applicants should possess (or be about to receive) a PhD in a relevant discipline. The post is available from 1 April 2014. Interviews are expected 11/12 December 2013.
Applications, quoting the post reference, should include a 2-page CV, publications list, contact details for three professional referees, a completed form CHRIS/6 Parts I and III (downloadable from the Apply link below). Applications should be sent to Leanne Moden, PA to Professor Shankar Balasubramanian, Department of Chemistry, Lensfield Road, Cambridge CB2 1EW (email: herchel-smith-pa@ch.cam.ac.uk).
