A postdoctoral position, funded by the Wellcome Trust, is available to work with Prof Peter McNaughton http://www.kcl.ac.uk/biohealth/research/divisions/wolfson/about/people/staff/McNaughtonPeter.aspx) on the role of HCN pacemaker ion channels in pain sensation. We have recently discovered that HCN2 ion channels are important for pain, whileHCN4 ion channels are well known to regulate the heart rate. A linked drug discovery programme is developing HCN2-selective blockers as novel analgesics. A main objective of the postdoctoral position will be to demonstrate that HCN2-selective blockers can alleviate pain without affecting the heart rate.
Candidate HCN2-selective blockers will be tested for efficacy against mouse HCN isoforms using patch clamp, and then their effects on heart rate and as analgesics in intact mice will be tested For this project you will need to have a strong background in mouse behavioural studies and ideally also in patch clamp electrophysiology though if you do not have experience in this area we can offer training. A PhD is a requirement for the post.
The appointment will be made, dependent on relevant qualifications, within the Grade 6 scale, currently £31,331 to £37,382, per annum plus £2,323 per annum London Allowance.
