Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Epidemiology of Multiple Sclerosis : Stockholm, Sweden
The Department of Clinical Neuroscience (CNS) conducts research and education in the field of neuroscience from the molecular level to the society level. The clinical research and education is conducted in collaboration with other research groups from the Karolinska Institutet, with other universities as well as the Stockholm County Council.
Division
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic inflammation of the central nervous system. There are approximately 17.000 MS patients in Sweden today and a large number of these participate in the Swedish MS registry. Despite access to disease modifying drugs many MS patients are still affected by significant disabilities. In recent years, a large number of genes and several environmental factors influencing MS risk have been identified.
Within the MS Group at the Department of Clinical Neuroscience, we perform research into the causes, disease mechanisms, treatment and disease progression of MS. Clinical data from the Swedish MS registry has a central role in these research projects. We also have access to large data collections of Swedish MS patients and healthy controls including genotyping data and environmental factors. Combining all these data with data from the public health registries presents an opportunity and a challenge. In the research group we employ physicians, biologists, statisticians and programmers. We are actively developing the research infrastructure as well as the mathematical analysis tools in collaboration with external expertise at the research forefront.
Duties
We are now looking for two postdocs in MS epidemiology to develop links between existing databases and public registries, to select and develop appropriate statistical methods and to examine the importance of genes, environment and treatment for MS progression. The work will be carried out independently, but in close collaboration with an extensive network of researchers.
Entry requirements
We are looking for postdoctoral researchers with a MD/PhD or PhD in epidemiology or biostatistics and with documented experience of health and population based registry research as well as extensive knowledge of statistical calculation methods. Programming skills and experience of neuroepidemiology, especially MS, would be an advantage. The successful candidate is fluent in both written and spoken English. Good communication skills and ability to work with people from different professional backgrounds is required.
A person is eligible for a position as postdoctoral research fellow if he or she has obtained a PhD no more than seven years before the last date of employment as postdoc.
Application process
An employment application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish:
- A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defence, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
- A complete list of publications
- A summary of current work (no more than one page)
- Verifications for crediting of illness, military service, work for labour unions or student organisations, parental leave or similar circumstances
- Verification from the thesis defence committee or the equivalent (only if the thesis defence is scheduled within three months after the application deadline)
