Postdoctoral Research Appointment(s)
The Emergence of Structure during the Epoch of Reionization
Fixed-term: Up to 3 years in the first instance.
The Institute of Astronomy (IoA), Cambridge expects (subject to available funding) to fill a vacancy for one or more postdoctoral research associates to join a research team based at the Kavli Institute for Cosmology Cambridge(KICC). The team studies the Emergence of Structure during the Epoch of Reionization supported by an ERC Advanced Grant (PI: Martin Haehnelt, senior research team member: Richard McMahon). The research is interpreted broadly, to range from the first galaxies and massive black holes to the reionization of hydrogen and helium to the physical state of the Intergalactic Medium and its relation to galaxies in the post-reionization epoch. Theoretical/numerical and observational candidates working in these areas are encouraged to apply. For observational candidates there is the opportunity to get involved in follow-up observations of high-redshift quasars from the DES and VISTA surveys and experience with quasar absorption line spectroscopy would be of advantage. The IoA/KICC offer a vibrant research environment and have excellent access to observational and high-performance computing facilities.
Applicants must have a PhD in Astronomy or a related field or have submitted by time of appointment. The current Research Associate salary scale is £28,132 to £36,661 p.a., depending on experience, plus superannuation benefits. In exceptional cases appointment of more experienced candidates at the level of senior research associate (£37,756 to £47,787) is possible.
Applications must be made via the on-line system accessible at http://www.ast.cam.ac.uk/people/vacancies. Applications should include a CV, publications list, and statement of research interests and a CHRIS/6 cover sheet (part 1 and 3 only required) via the 'Apply' button below. The names and contact details for three referees should also be provided. Referees will be contacted automatically following an application but applicants are strongly advised to prepare nominated referees for the need to provide references (in response to the on-line generated request) in good time and by the 8th February 2014 at the latest. If you have any queries about your application, please email pdrec(at)ast.cam.ac.uk.
