Two positions are available as part of the above EPSRC funded interdisciplinary research project. The work is concerned with understanding fundamental molecular interactions important in formulation of polymer based drug delivery systems, particularly solid dispersions. The successful candidates will work across a number of groups within the UK’s top rated School of Pharmacy. The project will combine the use of a range of computational modelling and high throughput physicochemical characterisation techniques to understand and predict polymer drug interactions. It will use systems based on the biodegradable poly(glycerol adipate) and a panel of drug molecules with varying properties.
One position will focus on computational modelling, combining atomistic and mesoscale molecular dynamics simulations with modern in silico miscibility/solubility modelling methods e.g. DPD. Models of drug polymer interactions will be used to predict polymer drug compatibility using solubility parameters or other descriptors from the computational models.

The other position will focus on the experimental work, and will deal with preparation of a range of novel biodegradable polymers and the analysis of polymer drug interactions using a variety of (mainly high throughput) physicochemical methods to include, Raman and optical microscopy, XRPD and diffusion studies. The resulting large datasets will be analysed by, and correlated with, predictions from the molecular modelling studies.

It is expected that some work on the project will be carried out with our industrial partner Astra Zeneca at their site in Macclesfield.
Candidates must hold a PhD and preferably have some relevant post-doctoral experience, in either or both of computational modelling and polymer chemistry/physical chemical analysis. Both posts offer a suitably qualified candidate the opportunity to develop exciting new methodologies and insights into fundamental chemical interactions with a strong application within the pharmaceutical industry.
The post is available immediately and will be offered on a fixed-term contract for a period of 36 months.
