Eastern Academic Research Consortium (Eastern ARC) is an exciting new collaboration between the Universities of Essex, East Anglia, and Kent. The consortium builds upon recent partnership bids for doctoral training awards in the natural and environmental sciences and the arts and humanities, as well as a range of other bilateral research relationships.
Eastern ARC will become a significant new force in research and research training by acting collaboratively, responding creatively and effectively to key drivers that are changing the landscape of research and research training in universities
Digital Humanities - Big Data
One Eastern ARC Fellow will be recruited to this area, to be based at the University of Essex, but to work across all three universities in the ARC.
The University of Essex is the home of the UK Data Service that is both an archive and a skills repository in the use of data for research in the Humanities and the Social Sciences. Our definition of Big Data is informed by the AHRC as an information resource which is so large that it exceeds the capacity of commonly used software and requires the user to engage with new methodologies to deal with the size of their data-set.
The following projects and resources are in place for the study of Big Data:
The provision of guidance on the creation, on the curation, and on the dissemination of digital content based on historical sources via the History Data Service – now incorporated within the UK Data Service.
The use of qualitative and mixed methods approaches to economic and social data via via Qualidata (Economic and Social Data Service) that is incorporated within UK Data Service;
The creation of Integrated Census Microdata (I-CeM) dataset to make historic British censuses available to researchers.
The use of longitudinal data to understand migration, households, and health & the life course.
The formation of data-sets to research the globalisation of rendition flights and secret detention.
Interdisciplinary approaches to data, including data-mining, Bayesian epistemology and probability.
The Fellowship is available from 1 August 2014, initially for a period of five years, during which time the appointee will be supported to gain their own external funding.
Applications are invited from researchers with sufficient postdoctoral experience to demonstrate potential for independence and with an emerging reputation for research leadership. Candidates must have a PhD or equivalent level of qualification in a relevant discipline or subject area and be able to satisfy the essential criteria detailed in the person specification.
