An opportunity exists to work at the fore front of the biological ion mobility spectrometry / mass spectrometry development. We are looking for a highly skilled and motivated coworker that loves risk and enjoys taking responsibility & leadership within a young and dynamic laboratory that is in the process of being set up at the Chemistry and Biochemistry Department at the Florida State University.

The fundamental, long-term objective of our lab is to advance ion mobility spectrometry / mass spectrometry into a routine, biological structure elucidation technique. Ion mobility spectrometry / mass spectrometry has the unmatched capability to determine molecular mass and shape independently, at the same time, and in a highly rapid and sensitive manner. To empower life science research through these opportunities, a strongly interdisciplinary research is thus being established at the intersection of biophysics, immunology, computational, physical, and analytical chemistry. The broader setting within the Florida State University provides an ideal opportunity for this interdisciplinary research program due to close interactions with facilities provided by the National High Energy Field Laboratory, the FSU College of Medicine and the Institute for Molecular Biophysics at FSU.

We provide a demanding research environment and seek to hire highly motivated candidates to support our research specifically on the role of structure-function relationship of chemokine oligomers during the onset of atherosclerotic lesions and the development of cancer metastases. This positions requires the successful candidate to take on leadership in developing, attracting external funding to support, and supervising graduate and/or undergraduate students to implement independent, creative research avenues. An commitment to stay in the laboratory for at least two years is required in order to successfully contribute to developing a strongly interdisciplinary research program combining ion mobility mass spectrometry with computational and physical chemistry methods to characterize the structures of protein and peptide complexes.

The successful candidate will hold a B.Sc. and/or M. Sc. in chemistry (broadly defined), and a Ph.D. (or equivalent) in physical or analytical chemistry (broadly defined). This position will require the pursuit of research in an interdisciplinary setting, and an interdisciplinary research background within a biomedical field is thus strongly preferred. Research experiences related to the self-assembly of biological molecules is required. Prior postdoctoral experience of at least two years is required, and must not have been pursued in the same group as the Ph.D. We are seeking to expand our laboratory skills and thus we seek to hire outstanding candidates without (or only minor) prior experience in the fields of computational chemistry, ion mobility spectrometry, or mass spectrometry. One of the paths that our group will take is to combine mass spectrometric techniques with those of surface functionalization. We thus seek to hire a candidate versatile in the functionalization, manipulation, characterization of surfaces (gold, glass) related to life science research. Experiences with spectroscopic techniques (including laser, optical spectroscopy), surface functionalization and characterization methods (including XPS and in particular lithographic techniques such as electron-beam or photolithography) are required.

The successful candidate has further demonstrated continued academic success by a GPA better than B (or equivalent) throughout the career, and a magna cum laude or better (or equivalent) during the Ph.D studies. Research experiences during B.Sc. or M.Sc. degree without requirements by the respective curriculum is a must. Scholarly success has been demonstrated through contributing to publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals and/or scientific conferences. Further, academic excellence has been demonstrated through an award of excellence during the B.Sc, M.Sc., or Ph.D. studies and the ability to attract external funding has been demonstrated through a fellowship (or equivalent) of at least $25,000 during doctoral and / or post-doctoral research. This amount may not include in-kind contributions and must have been awarded from an institution other than those where the Ph.D. or post-doctoral research was pursued. The Ph.D. must have been conferred within five years prior to employment.
