The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is one of the highest ranked scientific research organisations in the world. The Headquarters Laboratory is located in Heidelberg (Germany), with additional sites in Grenoble (France), Hamburg (Germany), Hinxton (UK) and Monterotondo (Italy). The Structural & Computational Biology Unit is looking for a Research Technician / Laboratory manager for the research group of Dr. John Briggs. The successful candidate will participate in research exploring important aspects of viral and cellular biology within a group specialising in cryo-electron microscopy. (S)he will use, optimize and if necessary develop lab protocols which may incorporate molecular and cellular biology techniques, virus and protein expression and purification, cell culture, and electron microscopy. The post holder will also be responsible for lab management tasks such as equipment maintenance and stock ordering, and will play a role in coordination of lab life. (S)he will enjoy providing assistance and training to other group members, will be interested in extending his/her own skills, will be able to work independently, and be highly motivated. Depending on interest and qualification, this position may also offer the opportunity for more independent pursuit of research goals. Qualifications and Experience: Minimally a university or technical school degree in a relevant field. Candidates with a PhD will also be considered. The ideal candidate will have strong expertise and extensive experience in methods used in molecular biology, cell biology and protein or virus expression and purification. They will have experience with lab management such as ordering and stock control and must have excellent communication, teamwork and interpersonal skills. Experience of electron microscopy would be an advantage. Basic word processing/spreadsheet skills and fluency in English are required. |
