The Cardiovascular Epidemiology Unit (CEU) conducts world-leading interdisciplinary research into the prediction and prevention of cardiovascular disease, with a portfolio of studies that comprises >2.5 million participants.
Professor John Danesh is the Unit's overall Director and Professor Simon Thompson is the Unit's Director of Research in Biostatistics.
Due to recent expansion an opportunity has arisen for a talented medical/applied statistician who is interested in joining the Unit to work on world-leading large-scale observational studies of cardiovascular disease and clinical trials of type 2 diabetes and abdominal aortic aneurysms. This position can be filled by an appropriate candidate at the Research Associate or Research Assistant level, depending on relevant qualifications and experience.
The main responsibilities of this role will be: (i) leading analyses / providing statistical support for aetiological and risk-prediction modelling in the large-scale EPIC-CVD consortium, (ii) actively engaging in a programme of work developing statistical methods in the area of cardiovascular risk-prediction, (iii) acting as Trial Statistician for a computer-based self-management intervention clinical trial for people with type 2 diabetes, and (iv) assisting in the long-term analysis of a series of trials investigating benefits, costs and harms of (elective and emergency) endovascular surgery in patients with an abdominal aortic aneurysm.
The post provides a unique opportunity to be actively involved in a number of applied collaborations, whilst the post-holder will also be encouraged to develop statistical methodology to help achieve the aims of the CEU research programme and take a leading role in writing methodological papers.
The post-holder will have: (1) relevant statistical qualifications (eg, a Masters or PhD in Medical/Applied statistics), (2) a sound understanding of statistical concepts, ideally in relation to epidemiology and clinical trials, (3) strong quantitative skills, (4) comprehensive experience of using Stata or R. The post-holder should also be able to work independently, accurately judge priorities, and have excellent organisational and communication skills.
