Description:
We are looking for an enthusiastic and highly motivated scientist who is interested in working in a multi-disciplinary team at the forefront of translational Alzheimer's disease (AD) research. Our group aims to develop new in vivo diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers as well as novel treatment strategies that will delay or prevent the progression of the disease.
The focus of the research studies will be characterization and pharmacological analyses of certain target enzymes to develop new in vivo ligands for positron emission tomography assessments of patients with dementia such as AD and Lewy Body dementia (LBD). We will also use cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), plasma postmortem brain tissues and astroglial cell cultures to deduce cholinergic regulatory processes concerning neuroinflammation and functional status of cholinoceptive cells in the brain.
The aim is to improve our understanding of the underlying molecular pathophysiology in AD and LBD, which is critical in developing new diagnostic, prognostic and therapeutic biomarkers for clinical use.
The environment provides excellent post-doctoral training in an international working environment, with national and international collaborations, and possibilities to publish in high impact journals.
Requirements:
Candidates must hold a non-Swedish PhD degree or a foreign qualification deemed equivalent to a doctoral degree within the area of neuroscience research with documented experience in neurochemistry, radio-ligand binding and autoradiography assays and/or cell culture and immunochemistry studies and have a strong interest in neurodegenerative diseases. Previous experience in protein signaling, and confocal microscopy is highly desirable.
The successful candidate will also be expected to have established record of high-quality scientific research and publications, ability to work both independently and as a member of a collaborative, scientific team, excellent verbal and written English skills, and to write and apply for grants.
The candidate should have completed his/her PhD degree within three years before the last date for application. Candidates who have completed their degree earlier than this should receive equal priority if special grounds exist.
Postdoctoral scholarship will be awarded and the position is available immediately. The duration of the fellowship is up to 24 months. Educational scholarship are restricted for postdoctoral studies and may be awarded for up to two years in the five years following the public defense (or equivalent) of a doctoral thesis.
The scholarship amount is approved for six months at a time, is paid monthly and is exempted from Swedish income tax. Scholarship may not be given to anyone who in the two years before the proposed award of the scholarship has received a salary or remuneration from Karolinska Institutet.
Application process: Applications and enquires should be addressed to Dr Taher Darreh-Shori at taher.darreh-shori@ki.se, and contain the following documents:
1. Short cover letter describing interest in the position.
2. A complete curriculum vitae, including degrees and academic distinctions, date of the thesis defense, title of the thesis
