Division
Karolinska Institutet-Alzheimer Disease Research Center (KI-ADRC) within the Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society conducts groundbreaking preclinical and clinical research on Alzheimer Disease (AD) and related diseases. Different research groups in the center investigate not only the disorder but also other disorders from different perspectives, emphasizing the integration of basic neuroscience, clinical research, molecular genetics and epidemiology.

The research group
Our research group works on basic protein biochemistry, using a multitude of biochemical and biophysical methods, recombinant protein production in E. coli, as well as studies in human cell lines and Drosophila melanogaster. At our department we have access to mouse models and biobank material, and we have a strong network of national and international collaborators.
We are studying the BRICHOS domain, a naturally occurring chaperone domain, which we have shown is a potent inhibitor in vitro and in vivo, of amyloid ß-peptide (Aß) aggregation and toxicity. These properties make BRICHOS in interesting candidate for prevention and treatment of Alzheimer's disease (AD). We are now aiming to further investigate if and how BRICHOS could be harnessed for treatment of AD, and we are therefore recruiting a postdoctoral research fellow for this project.

Duties
The project will include design, expression and purification of recombinant BRICHOS protein linked to different translocation signals, and biochemical and biophysical analyses of BRICHOS anti-amyloid activity. Mouse models of AD will be used to study the transport of BRICHOS over the blood brain barrier (BBB), and the effects of BRICHOS on the pathology related to the disease. The project will be
performed in close collaboration with other research groups.

Entry requirements
A person is eligible for a position as postdoctoral research fellow if he or she has obtained a PhD no more than seven years before the last date of employment as postdoc.
The postdoc candidate should have a PhD degree in (bio)medicine, biotechnology, biochemistry, cell biology or similar topic. The postdoc to be recruited is expected to have experience of working with transgenic mouse models, knowledge in neurodegenerative diseases and protein biochemistry and molecular cell biology techniques. Experience from studies of the blood brain barrier and models thereof, immunohistochemistry / immunofluorescence methods, and CNS pathology is qualifying.

The postdoc candidate is expected to have a strong drive to pursue experimental research, and an ambitious and innovative attitude. The projects are pursued in collaboration with several research groups, and good collaborative skills are necessary. Very good ability to speak and write in English is a requirement.
