About Us
RAL Space is undergoing a period of expansion and diversification having recently delivered optical cameras to the International Space Station and a series of high profile NASA solar observatories. Due to this diversification of our portfolio, we are now seeking to recruit an experienced Experimental Physicist to lead and manage activities relating to quantum sensor technology developments for space science, Earth observation and terrestrial applications. This is an opportunity to develop a new technology area within RAL Space, reflecting priorities in our customer community and associated mission opportunities. RAL Space has a long standing heritage of excellence in Space flight going back over 50 years and a proven track record in contributing to more than 200 instruments in space.
About the role
The post holder will work within RAL Space Imaging Systems Division which consists of 30 optical and electronics design and production engineers working on a variety of space and ground-based programmes. He/she will be an experienced experimental physicist and will be expected to lead independent research and technology development in the area of quantum sensors. He/she will be required to interact with industry and space agencies, and also establish partnerships with research institutes and universities. The post holder will need to be highly self-motivated and able to manage work effectively to strict deadlines. An important duty will be to take a lead and manage specific project studies, prepare, present and debate proposals as appropriate, prepare and defend costings and manage projects/staff as appropriate. In addition, the post holder will be expected to be proactive in seeking new opportunities, multi-task across programmes and work closely with Project Managers, Specialist Design Engineers, Group Leaders and the Division Head as appropriate. The post holder will be expected to lead project reviews, internally and for customers, and act as a representative of RAL Space at meetings and international conferences.
About you
A PhD in experimental Physics and a First degree in Physics, Engineering or equivalent are essential. The post holder will have excellent communication skills with an inventive and lateral way of thinking.
