Employer: The Wesley Research Institute
Location: Brisbane, Australia
Deadline: 11 April 2014
Salary: UQ academic salary Level A or B (depending on qualifications and experience) plus superannuation and salary sacrificing benefits
Appointment: Full-time, fixed-term for up to 3 years
The Wesley Research Institute (WRI) is a not-for-profit organisation that conducts research that focuses on improving patient care and quality of life. Our clinical and applied research aims to discover, test and refine new techniques for better diagnosis and treatment of illness and disease.
The primary function of this role is to lead a new research team in the study of neurodegenerative diseases (Huntington’s Disease and Friedreich’s Ataxia) under the supervision of Prof Christian Gericke at the Wesley Research Institute and A/Prof John O’Sullivan at the University of Queensland Centre for Clinical Research and the Department of Neurology at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital. For a clinically qualified fellow there will be opportunities to participate in the care of patients in the specialist clinics. A strong collaboration with Friedreich’s Ataxia Research Association and the Huntington’s Disease Association exists and it will be expected that the Fellow will work closely with both patient organisations. In addition, strong laboratory partnerships exist with the Queensland Brain Institute and the School of Biomedical Sciences at the University of Queensland.
This Fellowship is funded through a charitable grant from the John and Wendy Thorsen Foundation and there will be support for up to two PhD scholarships to work in the team led by the Post-doctoral Fellow.
For the Clinical Research Fellow role you are required to hold a medical degree that is registrable with the Medical Board of Australia and have significant clinical and/or research experience in neurology. You will be expected to register for a higher degree (MPhil/PhD) at the University of Queensland.
For the Post-doctoral Research Fellow position it is essential that you hold a PhD in a neuroscience-related subject and that you have some experience of research in neurodegenerative diseases.
Ideally both clinical and non-clinical applicants will also have a demonstrable record of individual or contributions to research publications and some experience of undertaking applied clinical or mixed clinical and laboratory research projects. Research experience in neurodegenerative diseases, in particular Huntington ’s disease or Friedreich’s Ataxia, is a distinct advantage.
Excellent presentation, interpersonal skills, excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential and you will have the ability to demonstrate experience and skills in IT and the use of systems.
The post will be based at the Wesley Research Institute, the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital and a relevant UQ laboratory. Depending on the level of seniority an adjunct academic appointment will be sought from the University of Queensland for the successful candidate. The position reports to the CEO of the Wesley Research Institute, Professor Christian Gericke.
Remuneration is aligned with university salary scales (UQ Level A or B) plus generous salary sacrificing benefits available to charities.
