Applications are invited for a three year postdoctoral research position to work on a BBSRC funded project. The project will develop quantitative methods to dissect the molecular basis of cell-cell variability within pluripotent stem cell populations.
In recent years it has become clear that a surprising degree of cell-to-cell variability can exist within apparently functionally homogeneous stem cell populations. However, the origin and consequences of this cellular diversity are unclear. In order to address this problem, this project aims to integrate high-throughput single cell gene expression assays with mathematical models to better understand cellular variability within mouse pluripotent stem cell populations.
The successful candidate will play a key role in a highly multidisciplinary team that includes scientists from the Faculty of Medicine and the School of Mathematics at Southampton as well as collaborators from Kyushu University, Japan. The work will involve both experimental cell biology and computational/bioinformatic analysis, and experience in both experimental stem cell biology and computational analysis are essential for this position. Candidates must have (or be very soon to complete) a PhD in quantitative cell biology or a closely related discipline (or equivalent).
This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute collaborative research in a leading research institution. The University of Southampton has a strong interdisciplinary research focus, and recently invested £45 million in the new Institute for Life Sciences in order to create an environment that actively fosters multidisciplinary research in the Life Sciences.
