    Job Description

    The Palo Alto Veterans Institute for Research (PAVIR) is seeking a Life Sciences Postdoctoral Fellow position to investigate the role of leukocyte trafficking in immune tolerance and homeostasis under the mentorship of Dr. Husein Hadeiba, Research Scientist and Principal Investigator at PAVIR. Co-mentorship will also be provided by Dr. Eugene Butcher, Professor of Pathology at the Stanford University School of Medicine.

    Dr. Hadeiba’s primary focus in on the role of dendritic cells (DCs) in regulating adaptive immune responses and on DC trafficking pathways in the maintenance of immune homeostasis and the prevention of autoimmunity. The laboratory has developed in vivo models to assess the role of different DC subsets and their homing properties on thymocyte development during central tolerance.

    This is a regular, full time (40 hrs/wk), exempt position.

    PAVIR is a nonprofit foundation affiliated with the Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System (VAPAHCS). As a condition of employment, all PAVIR employees are required to have an approved Without Compensation (WOC) appointment with VAPAHCS and complete a background check before they can commence work.

    Please note, all PAVIR funded Postdoctoral Fellows will hold a Postdoctoral Fellow appointment through Stanford University and will have access to Stanford resources.

    Duties:
    Conduct in-vitro and in-vivo experiments investigating the role of leukocyte trafficking in health and disease;
    Perform various cellular and molecular biological techniques including immunological assays and flow cytometry;
    Analyze experimental data and maintain detailed lab notes regarding experiment outcomes;
    Prepare reports and scientific papers from the data acquired for publication;
    Maintain animal colony, assist with general laboratory maintenance, order supplies, and comply with regulations.

    Requirements:
    EDUCATION: Ph.D. or M.D. in Immunology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Stem Cell Biology, or in a related field;
    EXPERIENCE: No postgraduate work required; Experience and/or background in immunology desired;
    Strong knowledge of immunology, cell and molecular biology including complex cellular and molecular biology techniques;
    Understanding and working knowledge of research lab requirements/procedures and scientific research methodology;
    Strong scientific writing skills and demonstrated capacity to drive first author publications;
    Strong knowledge of research procedures and protocols gained through education or experience;
    Experience in a variety of research techniques/methods and follow-up data collection;
    Ability to work independently and within a team context;
    Excellent communication skills (written and verbal), including public speaking skills;
    Excellent organization skills and attention to detail;
    Proven technical and analytical skills;
    Ability to troubleshoot an experiment as necessary;
    Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and databases;
    Intermediate knowledge of math and statistics.

    Environmental Conditions / Physical Demands:
    Physical: Lifting up to 10-20 lbs occasionally, standing, bending, repetitive movement, etc.
    Environmental: Exposure to wet lab environment, bloodborne pathogens, radiation, toxic / caustic chemicals or reagents.
