THE COLLEGE/ DEPARTMENT: NTID, one of the nine colleges of RIT, is the world’s largest technological college serving deaf and hard of hearing students. Created by Congress and funded by the U.S. Department of Education, it represents the world’s first effort to educate large numbers of deaf students within a college campus planned primarily for hearing students. Full-time, tenurable, 12 month, academic leadership position. Reports to the President of NTID and serves as a member of NTID’s administrative council.
 
TERM:
Recommended by the Strategic Research Coordinating Committee and appointed by the President of NTID.
 
DETAILED DESCRIPTION:          
The Associate Dean of Research must be an accomplished teacher and researcher with a record of grant-funded research.  The ADR will work with the NTID President and with the NTID Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs to position NTID as the preeminent national and international center regarding evidence-based research on the following: Teaching and Learning, Communication/Language and Literacy, Communication Technology/Access and Support Services, Employment and Adaptability to Social Change in the Global Workplace.  In addition to providing leadership for research in the college, the ADR will actively participate in obtaining and managing grants, serve as a member of the president’s leadership team, and play a key role in shaping and expanding NTID’s emerging research agenda.  We are seeking an individual who has the ability and interest in contributing to RIT’s core values, honor code, and diversity commitment. 
 
PRIMARY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY:
1 Provide leadership implementing NTID’s Strategic Decisions 2020 and the Five Year Plan for Research.
2 Promote, coordinate, and support collaborations for research and sponsored programs within the college, across RIT colleges, with other institutions in the United States and around the world.
• Create a supportive environment and facilitate research and grant-funded activities within and across strategic research centers and academic departments.
• Identify opportunities to support existing centers and establish new centers to further the college’s strategic vision for research and other grant-funded programs.
1 Work with the NTID Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs, Senior Research Administrator, and department chairs to:
• Develop strategic plans for expanding faculty research.
• Expand and support undergraduates participating in research.
1 Develop a mentoring system for pre-tenure and tenured faculty pursuing research.
2 Pursue external funding in the role of PI or co-PI.
3 Increase grant funding consistent with the overall University campaign objectives.
4 Provide leadership to the successful accomplishment of RIT/NTID sponsored research related goals for funding and faculty participation.
5 Work with the RIT Vice President for Research to coordinate NTID research efforts within the broader university research agenda.
6 Supervise faculty and staff assigned to the Office of the ADR.
7 Oversee Rosica Hall operations.
 
 Required Minimum Qualifications
• Earned doctoral degree.
• Distinguished record of sponsored research, preferably, but not limited to, the education, cognitive processes, linguistics, communication, social development, employment, or accessible technology of and/or for individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing.
• Experience as PI on multiple grants.
• Knowledge of a variety of funding sources (government, corporate and private foundations).
• Administrative or leadership experience.
• Proficiency in American Sign Language.
• Ability to contribute in meaningful ways to the college’s continuing commitment to cultural diversity, pluralism, and individual differences.
