Postdoctoral Training Fellow - Frickel Lab : London, United Kingdom

Postdoctoral Training Fellow
Frickel Lab

This is a full-time, fixed term position for 4 years on Crick Terms and Conditions of Employment

Salary from £33,500 per annum, subject to skills & experience

Context

The Francis Crick institute (the Crick) is a partnership between the Medical Research Council (MRC), Cancer Research UK (CRUK), the Wellcome Trust, University College London (UCL), Imperial College London and King’s College London. It is a registered charity whose purpose is to conduct biomedical research into all aspects of human health and disease.

The institute will be a world-leading centre of biomedical research and innovation. It will promote connections between researchers and disciplines and between academic institutions, healthcare organisations and businesses. Dedicated to research excellence, the institute will have the scale, vision and expertise to tackle the most challenging scientific questions underpinning health and disease. It will be world-class with a strong national role—training scientists and developing ideas for public good. Due to open in November 2015, The Crick will be located in a new, purpose built research centre in central London (Brill Place next to St. Pancras International) and will house some 1,250 researchers and 250 support staff.

The position of a Postdoctoral Training Fellow has been created to investigate the role of human host restriction factors against the intracellular pathogens Toxoplasma gondii and Salmonella typhimurium. You will join a dynamic team comprised of immunologists, cell biologists and biochemists, who are defining novel mechanistic pathways of immune mediated control of these intracellular pathogens. You will be expected to take a lead role in your project, to collaborate within the team and foster collaborations beyond the team, teach junior members of the team and interact with other members of the institute.

Organisation

The Postdoctoral Training Fellow will be a member of the Frickel lab at the Crick at the Mill Hill Laboratory. The lab will move to the Crick central London site in April 2016. The lab is embedded into the wider community of Infection and Immunity as well as Parasitology at Mill Hill. The postdoctoral fellow will report to Eva Frickel and will be responsible for driving their own project. The postdoctoral fellow will also be responsible for teaching junior lab members and interacting with the lab manager and lab administrator to ensure efficient running of the project.

Objectives

The Postdoctoral Training Fellow will conduct their own project within the research interests of the Frickel lab. The successful candidate will work on immune-mediated human host factors that restrict the intracellular pathogens Toxoplasma gondii and/or Salmonella typhimurium. The postdoctoral training fellow will productively interact with members of the lab, other members of the Crick and external collaborators to ensure swift progression of the research. It is expected that the successful candidate has a substantial amount of expertise in the area of Cell Biology and is able and willing to pass their knowledge to other members of the lab.

Specific objectives will include, but not be limited to:

• Independent research of pathogen restriction in human cells within the Frickel lab
• Productive and efficient use of time to drive research forward
• Productive collaboration within and outside the lab to drive research forward
• Teaching of junior lab members
• Publication of research findings in peer reviewed journals
• Presentation of research findings at seminars within the institute
• Attendance of national and international conferences to present research findings

Person Specification

The post holder should embody and demonstrate our core Crick values: Bold, Imaginative, Open, Dynamic and Collegial, in addition to the following:

Essential

• PhD (or final stages of completion completion) in a Biological Science
• Experience in Mammalian Tissue Culture
• Experience in common biochemical and cell biological techniques
• Publication record in peer reviewed journals
• Track record of working productively in a team
• Track record of excellent oral and written communication skills in English
• Highly motivated
• Organised and efficient

Desirable

• Experience in the study of infections
• Experience in mammalian tissue culture knock down and/or knock out techniques
• Experience/In-depth knowledge of signalling pathways and/or autophagy and/or cell vesicular transport
• Experience in transcriptional analysis
• Experience in supervision of junior lab members
