Postdoctoral position in MS-based proteomics

ovo Nordisk Foundation Center for Protein Research at University of Copenhagen Copenhagen, Hovedstaden (DK)-

Postdoctoral position in MS-based proteomics

One postdoctoral stipend is available in the Proteomics Technology Development & Application group at The Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Protein Research (CPR – www.cpr.ku.dk). The Center has been established at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen, to promote basic and applied discovery research on human proteins of medical relevance. The Center comprises a wide range of expertise and resources including proteomics, protein production and characterization to disease mechanisms. The proteomics section is headed by Prof. Dr. Matthias Mann, and the “Proteomics Technology Development & Application” group is lead by Prof. Dr. Michael L. Nielsen.

By joining our team, you will be part of a young and dynamic team consisting of international researchers. The Nielsen group focuses on developing novel proteomics methods & technologies for studying the cellular outcomes at a ‘systems-level’, with the aim to understand cellular phenotypes and diseases. To this end, we employ cutting-edge mass spectrometry (MS)-based technologies and develop unbiased proteomics methods for identification and quantification of post-translational modifications (PTMs), such as ubiquitylation, arginine methylation, ADP-ribosylation and biotinylation (Danielsen et al, MCP, 2011; Sylvestersen et al, COCB, 2013; Sylvestersen et al, MCP, 2014; Jungmichel et al, Mol Cell, 2013; Madsen et al Nat. Communications, 2015) and other cellular signalling molecules like phophoinositides (Jungmichel et al, Cell Reports, 2014).

Project Description

Recently, we have improved mass spectrometry-based proteomics methods for unbiased analysis of various PTMs (Jungmichel et al, Mol Cell., 2013; Sylvestersen et al, MCP, 2014; Tessarz et al, Nature, 2014; Christophorou et al, Nature, 2014, Madsen et al, Nature Communications, 2015). The applicant is expected to use the cutting-edge proteomic technologies developed in the Nielsen group for dynamic characterization of poly-ADP-ribosylation and/or Arginine methylation in mammalian cell systems, and to perform biological follow-up experiments on novel and interesting findings derived from proteomic screens. Poly-ADP-ribosylation and Arginine methylation are PTMs emerging as important components in many cellular processes, such as RNA/DNA metabolism, Translation, DNA damage, Chromosome organization, Cell cycle, cellular signalling, and others.

The ideal candidate is expected to investigate and detail the cellular roles and analyze occurring cross-talk of these PTMs. The candidate should be able to conduct independent and creative research, demonstrate scientific productivity, and show good inter-personal and communication skills.

Projected start date: Winter 2015 or later.

Qualifications

  • The candidate is required to have PhD or equivalent degree in natural or medical science.
  • Excellent scientific track record, including at least one publication as first author in a high quality, peer reviewed international journal.
  • Prior experience with poly-ADP-ribosylation or Arginine methylation research topics would be considered a distinct advantage.
  • Experience in biological fields relevant for poly-ADP-ribosylation or Arginine methylation, such as DNA damage, RNA/DNA metabolism, Cellular signalling, or other would be considered an advantage.
  • Prior experience in high resolution mass spectrometry is not essential, but would be considered an advantage.
  • Experience in advanced molecular biology techniques, such as genome editing, or similar will be regarded an advantage
  • Good communication skills, both oral and written.
  • An analytical aptitude for devising innovative scientific or technical solutions.
  • Demonstrate enthusiasm, motivation, flexibility and confidence.

Place of employment and work

The employment is at CPR (www.cpr.ku.dk), University of Copenhagen, located in central Copenhagen. The research environment at CPR is vibrant, ambitious, and international, with approx. 30 different nationalities currently represented. The Center comprises modern laboratories and state-of-the-art facilities within protein science. Seminars with high-profile international speakers and regular internal research seminars are organized at CPR.

Terms of salary and employment

Salary, pension and terms of employment will be in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Academics Central organization. Currently, the monthly salary is around 31,800 – 33,500 DKK (around 4,250€) plus 17.1 % in pension contribution.

Duration: 2 years

Application

Your application should be submitted electronically to: http://employment.ku.dk/faculty/

Your application should include the following documents:

  1. Motivated letter of application
  2. Curriculum vitae, incl. education and experience
  3. List of publications
  4. Letters of recommendation
  5. Names and contact details for two referees

Deadline for application: 18 September 2015

After the expiry of the deadline for applications, the authorized recruitment manager selects applicants for assessment on the advice of the Appointments Committee. All applicants are then immediately notified whether their application has been passed for assessment by an expert assessment committee. Selected applicants are notified of the composition of the committee and each applicant has the opportunity to comment on the part of the assessment that relates to the applicant him/herself.
