Metabolic Engineering Postdoctoral Research Associate
Job Description
Purpose: The Biosciences Division of Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking a microbiologist to work on a multi-institutional project to engineer microorganisms to cost effectively convert lignin into fuels and chemicals. Sustainability is a defining challenge of our times. Plant biomass represents an abundant renewable resource for the production of fuels and chemicals; however, no known organism is capable of both lignin deconstruction and high yield and titer production. Major Duties / Responsibilities: The successful candidate will work in close collaboration with a team using genetic manipulation, synthetic biology, physiological characterization, systems biology techniques, and analytical chemistry to improve fuel and chemical production from plant biomass. This will include strain design, construction, and characterization. The successful candidate will be expected to integrate with expert collaborators in transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, and metabolic modeling at ORNL and at partner institutions. This person will be expected to design and execute laboratory experiments, analyze quantitative data, write and communicate results to the scientific community. Qualifications: A Ph.D. in microbiology, biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics, or a related field is required. Applicants cannot have received the most recent degree more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment. The following skills are required or desired for this position: • Expertise in microbial metabolism • Expertise in molecular biology and microbial genetics • Effective writing and presentation skills, demonstrated by a strong publication record from previous research • Desire to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team • Experience with fermentation and strain characterization desired • Proven publication record is required This position is a temporary, full-time assignment not to exceed 24 months. For additional information please see: • Biosciences at ORNL: http://www.ornl.gov/sci/ees/bsd/ • Or contact Adam Guss (gussam@ornl.gov) ORNL is an equal opportunity employer. All qualified applicants, including individuals with disabilities and protected veterans, are encouraged to apply. |
