Employer:  CSIRO
Job Number:  4016781 (Ref.#. 4422)
Date Posted:  09/22/2015
Application Deadline: 10/18/2015

Job Description

• Excellent development opportunity

• Targetted career advancement plan

• Join CSIRO & really make a difference - Australian Science, Australia's Future!

Postdoctoral Fellowships at CSIRO provide opportunities to scientists and engineers, who have completed their doctorate and have less than three years relevant postdoctoral work experience. These fellowships will help launch their careers, provide experience that will enhance their career prospects, and facilitate the recruitment and development of potential leaders for CSIRO.

Postdoctoral Fellows are appointed for up to three years and will work closely with a leading Research Scientist or Engineer in their respective field. They carry out innovative, impactful research of strategic importance to CSIRO with the possibility of novel and important scientific outcomes. They present the findings in appropriate publications and at conferences.

We currently have an opportunity for a Postdoctoral Fellow to be part of a team working on various aspects of Fusarium diseases in CSIRO Agriculture Brisbane Laboratories. Working together with other team members, the fellow will conduct innovative research to improve Fusarium crown rot resistance in wheat and barley. Extensive genetic resources and new genomic technologies will be used to identify candidate genes responsible for resistance. The successful candidate will be expected to develop and apply innovative approaches to further characterised these candidate genes to provide a mechanistic understanding of how quantitative resistance functions in cereals. The fellow will also be expected to contribute to the wider inter-disciplinary efforts of the CSIRO Agriculture in developing breakthrough genetic breeding technologies.

Specifically you will:

• under the direction of senior research scientists, carry out innovative, impactful research of strategic importance to CSIRO that will, where possible, lead to novel and important scientific outcomes;

• generate suitable genetic stocks for fine mapping loci conferring Fusarium crown rot resistance;

• develop markers closely linked with targeted loci;

• identify and validate candidate genes via fine mapping and map-based gene cloning;

• undertake regular reviews of relevant literature and patents;

• produce high quality scientific and/or engineering papers suitable for publication in quality journals, conferences, for client reports and granting of patents;

• contribute to the development of innovative concepts and ideas for further research;

• communicate well, collaborate widely and make a contribution to the effective functioning of the research team;

• under the guidance of Senior Research Scientists, work collaboratively and honestly with internal and external colleagues to meet agreed milestones in a timely manner;

• adhere to the spirit and practice of CSIRO's Values, Health, Safety and Environment plans and Policies, Diversity initiatives and Zero harm goals;

• undertake an appropriate training and development program developed by CSIRO.

Location: St Lucia (Brisbane) Queensland
Salary: AU$81K to AU$88K plus up to 15.4% superannuation
Tenure: 3 year term
Ref No.: 4422

To be considered you will hold a PhD (or will shortly satisfy the requirement of a PhD) in genetics, genomics, molecular biology or a related area.

You will also have:

• a competitive track record of research in genomics evidenced by publications in quality journals;

• the ability to work independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team, that includes external collaborators;

• good communication skills with the ability to represent the research team effectively internally and externally, including at national and international conferences.

Owing to terms of the fellowship, candidates must not have more than 3 years of relevant Postdoctoral experience.
