Cutting edge facilities and equipment
At UNSW, we pride ourselves on being a workplace where the best people come to do their best work.
EMBL Australia Node in Single Molecule Science Unit is a part of the School of Medical Sciences on UNSWmain campus, Kensington, NSW. The group focus seeks to understand complex biological processes and systems starting from the single molecule level, and to derive practical medical applications from that knowledge. Our interest is in understanding how proteins actively control membrane properties to mediate T cell signalling and our research focuses on the use of advanced light imaging techniques, such as super-resolution microscopy (PALM, STED, SIM) and life cell imaging (image correlation spectroscopy, spinning disk confocal, TIRF).
About the role
At UNSW, we pride ourselves on being a workplace where the best people come to do their best work.
The School of Medical Sciences (SoMS) is the largest School in the Faculty, with an outstanding reputation for biomedical research, advanced research training, and world-leading education in medicine and biomedical sciences.
Cardiovascular disease and cancer remain the most prevalent causes of morbidity and mortality. The pathogenesis of these and a myriad of related diseases are underpinned by molecular and cellular changes in our blood vessels. Professor Levon Khachigian’s research is uncovering key networks of transcriptional control and inducible gene-regulatory circuits that lead to vascular disease. The group is also developing new experimental drugs that have the potential to treat a diverse range of health problems, from cancer and inflammation through to eye and heart disease.
About the role
- Fixed Term until 31 December 2016.
- Full-time
The School of Medical Sciences has an exciting opportunity for a PhD qualified individual to work within Professor Levon Khachigian’s laboratory as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow. In this role you will be is responsible for participating in a study that investigates mechanisms underlying the expression of pathophysiologically-important genes in vascular cells and the potential to use this knowledge to generate novel therapeutic strategies. The project involves a range of molecular and cellular biology techniques, including but not restricted to plasmid cloning or purification, transfection analysis, mRNA expression analysis, PCR, Western blotting, co-IP, ChIP analysis, siRNA and DNAzyme use and analysis, cell culture, proliferation and migration studies, and possibly animal models.
About you
To be successful in this role you will have:
- Demonstrated expertise and experience in experimental molecular and cellular biology, genomics and/or proteomics;
- Excellent technical, quantitative research and analytical skills with demonstrated understanding of experimental design and execution; and
- A PhD in biology, cell biology, molecular biology, biochemistry or related discipline.
- Demonstrated expertise and practical experience in bioinformatics and/or genomics analysis, promoter/enhancer structure-function, and transcriptional dynamics would be a distinct advantage.
You are required to systematically address the selection criteria in your application.
You may be required to undergo pre-employment checks prior to appointment to this role.
Application close: 5 February 2016…
