Postdoctoral Training Fellow in Intestinal Tissue Engineering : London, United Kingdom

This is a full-time, fixed term position for 4 years on Crick Terms and Conditions of Employment.
Salary competitive plus benefits, subject to skills and experience

The Francis Crick Institute (the Crick) is a partnership between the Medical Research Council (MRC), Cancer Research UK (CRUK), the Wellcome Trust, University College London (UCL), Imperial College London and King’s College London. It is a registered charity whose purpose is to conduct biomedical research into all aspects of human health and disease.
The institute will be a world-leading centre of biomedical research and innovation. It will promote connections between researchers and disciplines and between academic institutions, healthcare organisations and businesses. Dedicated to research excellence, the institute will have the scale, vision and expertise to tackle the most challenging scientific questions underpinning health and disease. It will be world-class with a strong national role — training scientists and developing ideas for public good. On 1 April 2015, staff from the London Research Institute (CRUK) and National Institute for Medical Research (MRC) transferred to the Crick to form a fully functional research institute on four sites. In 2016, the Crick will move to a single new, purpose-built research centre in St. Pancras which will house some 1,500 staff.

We seek a talented and motivated postdoc in the area of intestinal tissue engineering to join Dr. Vivian Li’s laboratory.

Organisation

Dr Li’s laboratory focuses on understanding the mechanisms of intestinal stem cell lineage specification and tumourigenesis. The ultimate goal is to translate the basic stem cell research to the clinic to aid cancer treatment and regenerative medicine.
Research techniques used in the laboratory include: molecular biology, biochemistry, 3-D human and mouse intestinal organoid culture, genome editing, confocal imaging, tissue engineering, mouse genetics and histopathology.

Objectives

The research aim is to engineer functional intestinal grafts for orthotropic transplantation. In this project, some of the specific aims could include but not limited to:

 3-D organoid culture derived from primary human and mouse intestine
 Decellularisation of intestine
 Co-culture of myofibroblasts, endothelial cells, neural crest cells etc.
 Recellularisation using bioreactor
 Animal handling including surgery (e.g. kidney capsule transplantation)
 Liaise with external collaborators both in the UK and abroad and visit collaborators’ labs to perform shared experiments
 Write and contribute to the preparation of scientific manuscripts, reports, presentations and records of experimental plans and results
 Supervise and provide technical advice to more junior members of the team when appropriate
Person Specification
The post holder should embody and demonstrate our core Crick values: Bold, Imaginative, Open, Dynamic and Collegial, in addition to the following:
Essential
 PhD in Developmental Biology, Stem Cells, Molecular Biology or similar (or in the final stages of PhD submission)
 Good knowledge and experience in molecular biology and tissue engineering
 Technical expertise in cell and tissue culture
 Proven track record of research (i.e. publication record)
 Strong written and oral communication skills
 Ability to work independently and also capable of interacting within a group
 Ability to design experiments, report on research progress and outcomes openly and review methodologies in response to feedback
Desirable
 Experience in 3-D organoid culture
 Experience in the use of bioreactor for tissue engineering
 Experience in animal handling and surgery (including kidney capsule transplantation)
 Experience in histology and microscopy
