Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Mapping Crustal Strain-rate and Velocity Fields in North-eastern Tibet : Oxford, United Kingdom
Salary: Grade 7: £30,738 - £37,768 with a discretionary range to £41,255 p.a.
The department seeks to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Assistant to work under the direction of Professors Barry Parsons, Philip England and Richard Walker (University of Oxford) on a project funded by the Natural Environment Research Council. The post, based at the Department of Earth Sciences, University of Oxford, aims to map the crustal strain-rate and velocity fields of north-eastern Tibet, including the Gansu corridor and Qilian Shan, by means of satellite radar interferometry using Sentinel-1 data accumulated since the launch of Sentinel-1A in 2014, combined with GPS measurements.
This goal lies within the remit of the NERC-funded Looking inside the Continents from Space (LiCS) project, and is also central to the objectives of the NERC/ESRC-funded Earthquakes without Frontiers (EwF) project, and the Seismicity and Tectonics in Ningxia, Gansu and Shaanxi (STiNGS) project, jointly funded by NERC/ESRC and the National Science Foundation of China.
The researcher will be responsible for using software developed through the LiCS project to analyse Sentinel-1 radar data from the first 3 years of that mission and construct crustal strain-rate and velocity fields for northern-eastern Tibet. They will also work with EwF/STiNGS colleagues to investigate the tectonic and hazard implications of these strain-rate fields. The post involves collaboration with investigators both in China and the UK.
A PhD in a relevant field at the time of starting the post is required, as are skills in satellite geodesy and remote sensing and experience of applying these techniques to investigate the earthquake cycle. The successful candidate will also have a good record of publications in this field and excellent communication skills.
This post is full-time and fixed-term for 1 year. We wish to fill the post at the earliest opportunity. Please see job description for further details of the post.
Applications must be received by 12.00 noon on Thursday 15 September 2016. Our provisional date for interviews is Friday 30 September 2016.
