The University of Sydney is Australia's first university and has an outstanding global reputation for academic and research excellence. It employs over 7600 permanent staff, supporting over 60,000 students.

Led by the University of Sydney, Legumes for Sustainable Agriculture (LSA) is a new national research hub funded through the ARC ITRH program with co-investment from GRDCWRF, state governments and six universities. LSA’s broad aims are to link basic discovery through to breeding outcomes to improve grain legume production. The University of Sydney’s node is based at the Centre for Carbon Water and Food in Camden and the IA Watson Grains Research Centre in Narrabri. The Narrabri campus, in the heart of the north western Wheat Belt, has 300 hectares of fertile, irrigable land for crop research and planting breeding, with new plant processing facilities, laboratories and state of the art controlled environment facilities.

We are seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Associate to work in LSA’s sub-program 1b “Managing the impact of extended drought”. The position will play a vital role in identifying the mechanistic basis of drought tolerance in grain legumes, especially chickpea that will improve development of grain legumes for water-limited conditions. This project requires a broad range of skills, including the use of gas exchange equipment, remote sensors and techniques for histological and biochemical analyses. You will need to be self-motivated and willing to contribute to a small team to achieve objectives.

The project will require you to phenotype diverse sets of germ plasm, develop novel ways to measure root and shoot traits under water-limited conditions and identify genetic control of pertinent traits. You will coordinate and carry out field trials at Narrabri, and design and carry out glasshouse experiments that complement the field trials.

You will have:
**
• a PhD in plant physiology or related field
• demonstrated research capability in one or more areas of plant water relations, plant hydraulics, abiotic stress physiology, water use efficiency, assimilate partitioning
• proven experience in maintaining and assessing experimental plant material in the field and greenhouse
• an ability to communicate effectively and clear written communication skills
• demonstrated ability to write reports and scientific papers and present data at scientific meetings
• a current manual driving licence
