The EMBL is an inter-governmental research organization dedicated to basic molecular biology research, technology development, service provision and advanced training. The EMBL Hamburg Unit is located on the DESY research campus and pursues research in structural biology and the development of instrumentation and computational methodology for macromolecular crystallography (MX) and small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). EMBL Hamburg is running two MX and one SAXS beamline on the high-brilliance synchrotron radiation source PETRA III. The beamlines are complemented by laboratories for biophysical sample characterization and preparation – including a recently installed CrystalDirect Harvester system - and computational facilities for data evaluation.
We are seeking for a highly motivated scientist to join the crystallography team at PETRA III. The successful candidate will support the user operation and the future development of the two MX beamlines including the extension of P14 by an additional end-station for time-resolved experiments. The post holder will be offered to carry out complementary research projects. Possible research areas include the development of novel methods for crystallographic data collection and structure determination combining the unique source properties of PETRA III, possibly in combination with those at the new European X-ray Free Electron Laser, and the advanced instrumentation and automation installed on the beamlines. The scientist will be associated with the group of Thomas Schneider, and will be strongly encouraged to collaborate with other groups from EMBL and/or with external research groups, including various opportunities on the DESY research campus in Hamburg.
