Postdoctoral - Spatiotemporal regulation of autophagy in yeast : Oslo, Norway

Oslo University Hospital is a highly specialized hospital in charge of extensive regional and local hospital assignments. As Scandinavia’s largest hospital, we carry out more than 1.2 million patient treatments each year. The hospital has a nationwide responsibility for a number of national and multi-regional assignments, and has several national centers of competence. Oslo University Hospital is responsible for approximately 50 percent of all medical and health care research conducted at Norwegian hospitals, and is a significant role player within the education of a large variety of health care personnel.

A postdoctoral position is available in the Cancer Molecular Medicine group of Dr. Enserink at the Institute for Cancer Research at the Division for Cancer Medicine from November 1, 2018 for 3 years.

The Cancer Molecular Medicine group is located at the Radium hospital, which is part of Oslo University Hospital, the largest academic hospital in Scandinavia. The group is one of 6 research groups of the newly established and interdisciplinary Centre of Excellence, CanCell, which is focused on finding novel mechanisms in cancer development that can be targeted in future cancer therapy. One of the main research aims of the group is to better understand cellular responses to nutrient stress.

We have recently completed an automated fluorescence microscopy screen in the budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae where we determined the effect of each and every gene in the genome on autophagy. This screen yielded many genes previously unknown to function in regulation of autophagy. The postdoc will unravel this genetic network to determine how these genes affect autophagy during changing nutrient conditions. This project involves molecular biology, budding yeast genetics, fluorescence microscopy, flow cytometry and bioinformatics. The work will be carried out in a highly collaborative team of researchers.

Interested persons should submit the documents listed below to the application. Note that applications lacking any of these four requirements will be discarded automatically, and only applications uploaded to Webcruiter will be evaluated (do not submit your application by email):
1) A concise application letter (1-2 pages) describing why you are interested in this specific position.
2) Curriculum vitae.
3) A list of publications with Pubmed ID (do not include full-text versions of articles).
4) Three reference letters, including contact information of all the references (mail address, postal address and phone number).

The application with attachments must be delivered in our electronic recruiting system, please follow the link “apply for position”. Foreign applicants are advised to attach an explanation of their University's grading system. Please note that all documents should be in English (or a Scandinavian language). In assessing the applications, special emphasis will be placed on the documented academic qualifications, as well as the candidate’s motivation and personal suitability. Interviews with the best qualified candidates will be arranged, which will include a presentation and a one-on-one meeting with several group members.

It is expected that the successful candidate will be able to complete the project in the course of the period of employment.

Qualifications
We are looking for a talented, enthusiastic and determined person who can work both independently as well as in the context of a team. Potential candidates have completed a PhD degree and have published in international, peer-reviewed journals. The successful candidate is looking forward to learning new techniques, has good communication skills and is well organized. Knowledge of basic methods in molecular biology is essential, such as cloning, SDS-PAGE and Western blotting, as well as fluorescence microscopy. Knowledge of either autophagy or yeast is also required (at least one of each, preferably both). Experience with bioinformatics, ChIPseq, RNAseq, RT-qPCR and characterization of post-translational modifications (e.g. phosphorylation, ubiquitination, sumoylation) is highly beneficial. The candidate may spend part of the project abroad to learn new techniques.
