Stanford University, Department of Bioengineering
Location: Stanford, CA
Application Deadline: Oct 15, 2018
Job Description
The Department of Bioengineering at Stanford University is seeking a dedicated and dynamic Lecturer to help develop and teach undergraduate bioengineering courses for the undergraduate major, with an emphasis on molecular and cellular approaches, synthetic biology, and physiology. The Lecturer will have opportunities for considerable creativity and initiative, including development and delivery of online learning, application of other modern educational methods, and participation in center grants and university-wide initiatives. This position, to which the department has a long-term commitment, will be a full-time, fixed term position that is eligible for renewal, based on performance, continuation of funding, and programmatic need. Starting salary will depend upon the level of experience of candidates. This is an exciting opportunity for someone with a strong commitment to excellence in undergraduate education to teach the world’s top students.
The Lecturer will help to lead several classes, including introduction of undergraduates to fundamental experimental methods and critical thinking central to the engineering of biology, systems-physiology teaching that pushes the leading edge of online learning, and a senior “capstone” class in which teams of students will integrate knowledge they have learned over the entire bioengineering curriculum to design and build innovative biological and/or medical devices and tools. In so doing the Lecturer will work closely with multiple Stanford faculty, staff and industry experts in development/preparation of curriculum and prototyping materials. The Lecturer will be dedicated to teaching cutting edge fundamental molecular biology, physiology, genetics, and genetic engineering methods, as well as critical thinking central to the engineering of biological and medical technologies. Expertise and practical experience with undergraduate learning in a project-based laboratory setting is required. Expertise with hardware and software engineering methods associated with device design would be helpful but not necessary. The Lecturer will also assist in operations of the Uytengsu Teaching Lab in conjunction with fellow Lecturers, including laboratory preparation and supervisory responsibility for technical staff. The Lecturer will also serve as a liaison between faculty and staff to advance cross-course and curriculum opportunities.
Strong candidates will have a Ph.D. in a related field and applied bioengineering experience in academic research and/or an industry setting. In addition to teaching expertise, the individual must demonstrate a deep commitment to promoting student safety in a teaching laboratory setting, and to promoting excellence in leading and defining bioengineering undergraduate education. Applicants should send CV and cover letter to: bioe-search@stanford.edu
