The Department of Medicine, Solna, is one of the largest departments at Karolinska Institutet. The department consists of several units that are separated into different research groups. The core activities of the department are research, doctoral education and undergraduate education for medical and biomedical students. The research has three main profiles: allergy, cardiovascular medicine and inflammatory diseases.

　　Duties

　　The applicant will be expected to conduct his/her research in cardiovascular immunology and metabolism with a focus on developing new therapies against atherosclerosis and cardiovascular diseases. The applicant should develop his/her project exploring the potential of modulating immunometabolic pathways to identify novel therapeutic targets against inflammation, lipid metabolism, and atherosclerosis. Applicants are expected to conduct high quality research in a collaborative manner. The postdoctoral fellow will be responsible for the planning of the project as well as data acquisition, preparation and analysis, manuscript writing and other activities for disseminating the results. Work is also to seek external research funding from external funding agencies.

　　Entry requirements

　　The work will mainly involve in vivo studies. The candidate must have a proven experience and knowledge in experimental models of atherosclerosis and/or cardiovascular diseases. Candidate should ideally have broad knowledge of science, and experience in the fields of immunology, and/or biochemistry, and pharmacology. Additional experience with the following technologies should be considered a plus: experience with human samples and biobanks, bioinformatics, and functional immune assays. He/she is expected to cooperate in national and international networks, so experience of working in networks of researchers and English language skills at a high level is required. International research experience gives an extra value. The scientific breadth of the employment requires good cooperation and communication skills. The applicant must be organized, thorough, proactive and a talented problem solver. When evaluating the candidates we place particular emphasis on academic training skills.

　　Scholarships for postdoctoral qualification can be established for foreign researchers who place their qualifications in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent.

　　A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent.

　　To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate.

　　The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.

　　Type of scholarship

　　A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent.

　　The amount is tax free and it is set for twelve months at a time, paid out on a six months basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.
