Job Description
The Department of Medicine at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine has an exciting opportunity for a Post-Doctoral Associate. This position will support Dr. Joana Almaca with her investigations that focus on the role of the microvasculature in type-1 diabetes.
The duties and responsibilities for this position may include, but are not limited to:
• Identifying the morphological changes of the human pancreatic islet microvasculature during the progression of type-1 diabetes using immunohistochemistry and electron microscopy.
• Characterizing human islet microvascular responses to endocrine cell activity, autonomic nervous input and endothelial cell activity by real-time confocal imaging of living human slices.
• Preparing living human slices from pancreas biopsies and culture them for extended periods.
• Designing, performing, and analyzing experiments in collaboration with Dr. Joana Almaca.
• Performing a broad range of activities including ex vivo imaging of islet cell biology, Ca2+ imaging, and surgical procedures to prepare pancreatic slices. Image processing and quantification (e.g., using ImageJ) will be performed.
• Reviewing relevant scientific literature; preparing written reports of experimental results, and keeping detailed laboratory books. Recording and documenting the collected data and performing analyses by employing provided analytical tools. Preparing manuscripts for publication.
• Contributing to decisions on experimental approaches, data analysis strategies, and publication strategies.
• Performing weekly implementation of projections.
• Performing mouse colony maintenance, dissection, and physiological experiments with rodents.
• Setting-up instruments, materials, apparatuses, and operating laboratory equipment required for specific assays.
• Assisting with solving problems related to equipment and data analysis.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Ph.D., M.D., or other doctoral-level degree with a strong scientific background in molecular physiology and demonstrated problem solving ability and creativity. Experience in imaging and image quantification is highly desired. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written. Possess publication records, a track record of obtaining own funding, and ability to work in a highly collaborative manner.
