Job Description
Dr. Cieslik’s laboratory is seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral trainee to study changes in extracellular matrix and inflammation in the aging heart. Particularly we are investigating the role of the TGF beta pathway, extracellular matrix and immune cells in cardiac fibrosis. Our previous studies found that the aging cardiac fibroblasts produce elevated levels of collagens and other extracellular matrix proteins contributing to fibrosis, but paradoxically respond poorly to TGF-b, a major pro-fibrotic cytokine. The altered aged fibroblast phenotype also shows an increased expression of various pro-inflammatory cytokines that promote infiltration of leukocytes from blood. Infiltrating leukocytes further activate resident fibroblasts and promote increased deposition of matrix. Interventions to prevent fibrosis will be the focus of the postdoctoral trainee research.

Co-author publications.
Present data in seminars and meetings.
The position is supported by an NIH grant.
Education:
PhD
Required:
Experience in handling mice.
Preferred:
Experience with RNA and protein extraction and detection.
Good techniques for culturing primary cells.
Preferred:
Background in immunology or cardiac physiology is a plus.
Good communication and writing skills.
