Postdoctoral Researchers in platelet and megakaryocyte biology

　　The Department of Experimental Biomedicine at the Rudolf Virchow Center/University Hospital Würzburg invites applications for

　　3 Postdoc positions (f/m/d)

　　Platelet activation at sites of vascular injury is essential for hemostasis, but in diseased vessels it can also lead to ischemic events, such as heart attack and stroke. Moreover, the interaction of platelets with cells of the immune system (“thrombo-inflammation”) is critically involved in the pathogenesis of inflammatory disease states. The production of platelets by their bone marrow precursor cells, the megakaryocytes, is tightly controlled and disturbances in this process may result in hemorrhagic disorders and vascular defects.

　　We focus on transgenic mouse models to study the roles of regulatory proteins (receptors, signaling molecules, cytoskeletal components) for platelet production and function in vitro and in vivo. Our research will yield novel insights into the process of platelet biogenesis and the complex functions of platelets in cardiovascular disease. Our long-term goal is to identify novel targets for the development of improved therapies against vascular diseases.

　　We are seeking excellent Postdocs to work on the following research topics:

　　1) Mechanisms of megakaryocyte polarization and platelet biogenesis

　　2) Signal transduction in platelet adhesion

　　3) Protein-protein interaction in platelet receptor signaling

　　Activities and responsibilities

　　The projects 1) and 2) will include the use of cutting edge in vitro and in vivo imaging techniques, cell biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, disease models and mouse genetics, and will have a strong biomedical/translational context. Project 3) will focus on biochemical analyses of protein-protein interaction, characterization of receptor-ligand interaction and protein engineering for preclinical therapeutic approaches. As a postdoctoral fellow in our group you will drive your own research project and collaborate closely with other group members, as well as local and international collaboration partners. You will furthermore engage in (co-)supervising PhD students and teaching activities.
