Job Description
This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment. Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance. : We are seeking a Postdoctoral Appointee with experience in nuclear engineering, physics, or materials science to collaborate with a diverse community of senior researchers engaged in developing a comprehensive understanding of tritium transport in materials (including, but not limited to: austenitic stainless steel, zirconium-based alloys, and various intermetallic materials) both in- and out- of radiation environments. On any given day, the you may be called on to: + Design and execute laboratory experiments to probe deuterium transport in different materials + Design and collaborate “capsule” experiments to study deuterium transport in research reactors + Characterize material and microstructure (e.g. through optical and electron microscopy) in order to understand how they influence hydrogen isotope diffusivity and trapping + Contribute to hydrogen transport models at various length scales to assist mechanistic understanding and to improve predictions of in-reactor tritium transport through multiple materials. + Communicate your findings to colleagues, customers and the larger scientific community through conference presentations, technical reports, and articles suitable for publication in high-impact journals Design and collaborate “capsule” experiments to study deuterium transport in research reactorsCharacterize material and microstructure (e.g. through optical and electron microscopy) in order to understand how they influence hydrogen isotope diffusivity and trappingContribute to hydrogen transport models at various length scales to assist mechanistic understanding and to improve predictions of in-reactor tritium transport through multiple materials.Communicate your findings to colleagues, customers and the larger scientific community through conference presentations, technical reports, and articles suitable for publication in high-impact journals
Required:
You have all the following: + PhD in nuclear engineering, physics, materials science, or a related field; + Laboratory experience including sample and instrument fabrication and data analysis; + A record of first-author or co-authored scientific publications in the above areas within peer-reviewed journals and presentations at scientific conferences; + A willingness and ability to travel, as-needed, to assist in in-reactor testing and to present at technical conferences; + Ability to obtain a Department of Energy Q-level security clearance.
