How to Apply:
Interested
candidates should send their CV, summary of prior research experience, future
research interests and career goals and a list of three references to Dr.
Tobias Giessen at tgiessen@umich.edu.
Job Summary:
A Postdoctoral
Research Fellow position is available in the lab of Dr. Tobias Giessen in the
Biomedical Engineering department at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.
Passionate and highly motivated scientists interested in the chemistry, biology
and engineering of microbial metabolism are encouraged to apply.
The
Giessen Lab conducts interdisciplinary research at the interface of basic and
applied science utilizing a broad range of approaches including biochemistry,
microbiology, structural biology and synthetic biology. The lab’s current focus
lies on understanding and engineering large protein assemblies with a focus on
megadalton protein organelles like encapsulin nanocompartments and bacterial
microcompartments involved in stress resistance, nutrient utilization and
pathogenesis. Basic science: The lab
seeks to explore and understand the functional diversity of protein organelles,
specifically in the context of the human microbiome, and to investigate their
contribution towards human health and disease. This will involve detailed functional
and structural studies of a given protein organelle system. Applied science: Using protein
engineering and synthetic biology we aim to design and build novel protein
assemblies and integrate them with advanced genetic circuits to tackle real
world problems in biomedicine, catalysis and sustainability. These efforts will
result in novel living diagnostics and therapeutics, programmable nanomaterials
and catalytic nanoreactors. Multiple basic and applied projects are available.
Required Qualifications:
A PhD
degree is required. A strong background in chemistry, biology, biological
engineering or other related discipline is required.
Desired Qualifications:
Experience
with molecular biology, protein biochemistry and structural biology, both x-ray
crystallography or cryo-electron microscopy, is a big plus.
Background Screening
University of
Michigan Health System conducts background screening and pre-employment drug
testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use
a third party administrator to conduct background screenings. Background
screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act.
Application Deadline
Job openings are posted for a minimum of seven calendar
days. This job may be removed from posting boards and filled anytime
after the minimum posting period has ended.
